FEEDBACK REPORT
The South African Society for Quality - SASQ proudly hosted a Quality Conference on 12-13 November 2009 in the Quantum Hall at the CSIR. 25 delegates attended this very successful event with the overall expectation of gaining valuable CPD points having been achieved.
The feedback from delegates who attended was very positive despite the many technical problems encountered and the lack of air conditioning in the venue. Delegates found the various Industry Expert’s presentations to be very informative and provided a valuable learning experience. The event organisation and registration process was found to be very well structured and together with the value for money was rated very highly. One delegate provided us with valuable tips on how to improve and we wish to extend our thanks for this.
Most positive aspects of the event were noted as follows:
- A very informative session with knowledgeable speakers presenting.
- Presentation by Douglas Pelser with emphasis that compliance as a standard is no guarantee of a quality/safe environment.
- The variation in presenters and topics which keeps one interested
- SASQ IS ALIVE!!!!
- Important aspects were highlighted and the sharing of ideas was valuable
- Walking away with more than what was paid for.
Most Negative aspects of the event were noted as follows:
- Time given to presenters is very limited and they tend to rush the presentation to keep within stipulated timeframe
- Lack of air-conditioning and technical problems encountered
- Transition from one speaker to the next did not happen smoothly

SASQ QUALITY CONFERENCE PROGRAMME AND PRESENTATIONS
The objective of programme was to provide delegates with valuable continual professional development through a variation of papers being delivered by various knowledgeable industry experts who aimed to share their knowledge and experiences with an emphasis on highlighting problems incurred. The programme saw presentations being delivered by 6 Industry experts and a 7th paper was delivered by Mr. Roy Ramphal, SASQ president, covering the new SASQ strategy and what the future holds.
In order to ensure that a professional level of competence was both maintained and improved the focus was on quality issues and Health and Safety compliance with emphasis that compliance as a standard is no guarantee of a quality/safe environment.
The overall feedback from delegates indicates that all presentations were very well received as the variation in speakers and presentation topics kept delegates interested throughout the day ensuring that beneficial CPD was gained. The important issues were highlighted and provided an opportunity for interaction and sharing of ideas between the speakers and the delegates.
Mr. Roy Ramphal closed the programme with a presentation on the South African Society for Quality’s new business strategy and used the opportunity to share with the delegates what the future holds for the association. SASQ is ALIVE!!! was the feedback received from one delegate and this is the exact message that Mr. Ramphal hoped to deliver. The presentation led to an interactive discussion with delegates with the objective of determining if SASQ needs to be re-constituted.
The discussion concluded with a unanimous recommendation that the SASQ should indeed be re-constituted with the objective of maintaining the Associations mandate to develop Quality Professionals in South Africa. For more information on this discussion please click the SASQ Business link at the bottom of the programme for the full report. Mr. Ramphal then requested all delegates to document a brief pledge to Quality, providing their names and advised that these would be published on the website.

Quality in S.A. Quality Compliments & Complaints - Actual examples from industry ISO9001 is the norm in industry to implement first in any company (the exception is in mining where ISO14001 is implemented first). Why would we look at quality solutions first? Because this is the only standard that affects bottom-line profit directly. One poor service or product delivery to the client and the client looks somewhere else. This could cause your company to generate less income and eventually to have to close because of having no clients. Currently and in the future quality product and service delivery is only going to become more important than ever before. Let us look at some practical examples: Toyota Yaris; Vets Choice; Woolworths Food; etc …. |

Will China redefine the Quality Benchmark in the 21st Century? China is perceived as a ‘low quality’ producer in the minds of many people in many nations of the globe. Children in schools talk about MCC and non-MCC products and some speak in derogatory terms about toys and games that are made in China (MCC= Made in China Junk), Japan had a similar reputation in the 1960s to that of China in the 2000s. But look and see how Japan’s products evolved over time. Will China lift the quality bar in the 21st century? This presentation will explore the answer

Management Responsibilities i.t.o. of the OHSACT and reasons why some risk and safety programmes fail Despite the harsh penalties for non-compliance to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Management still appear not to understand the requirements of the Act and the consequences for non compliance. In most cases, risk management and health & safety compliance is fragmented and often infective leading to a breakdown of compliance. The informative presentation takes the delegate through a number of scenarios which impact upon and cause risk and safety management programmes to be less effective and ultimately to fail. Hard hitting, informative, thought provoking and graphic.

Positive Quitting
"Employ the power of positive quitting. Most of us view quitting as something negative, but it's not. 'Winners never quit,' we're told, when, in reality, winners quit all the time: choosing to stop doing things that aren't creating the results they desire. When you quit all the things that aren't working for you, when you quit tolerating all the negative things that hold you back, you'll create a positive 'charge' in your life as well as create the space in your life for more positive experiences."
